چکیده

AIM To study and summarize our experience with the subtemporal transtentorial approach for resection of petroclival tumors. MATERIAL AND METHODS Twenty-eight patients who suffered from petroclival tumors and underwent tumor resection via a subtemporal transtentorial approach between October 2010 and July 2013 were retrospectively reviewed. RESULTS Total resection was performed in 22 cases, at a rate of 78.57%, subtotal resection in 5 cases, and large portion resection in 1 case. 13 patients who suffered from varying degrees of postoperative nerve dysfunction all improved or recovered, during the 6 to 24 month post-operative follow up. CONCLUSION The subtemporal transtentorial approach is one of the best approaches for resection of petroclival tumors, especially for a tumor at the petrosal apex and upper-middle clival region, and has the advantages of less trauma, easy procedure of craniotomy, and also a good surgical exposure.

Quantitative anatomic comparison of the extended pterional transtemporal transtentorial approach and the subtemporal transtentorial approach to the petroclival region.

AIM The anatomic characters and applicability of the extended pterional transtemporal transtentorial (EPTT) approach versus the subtemporal transtentorial (ST) approach for surgical treatment of petroclival tumors were evaluated. MATERIAL AND METHODS Ten sides from five adult Chinese injected cadavers were manipulated using both two approaches. Four deep bony anatomic landmarks were specified...

Retrosigmoid-transtentorial approach for petroclival meningiomas: operative technique and clinical outcome

Background: Petroclival meningiomas (PCMs) are technically challenging lesions. Although the standard retrosigmoid approach is one of the most effective approaches, this route may have some limitations for the tumors extending into the supratentorial region and middle cranial fossa. We provide a modified surgical technique called retrosigmoid-transtentorial approach (RTTA) to solve these proble...

Diagnosis and microsurgical treatment of chondromas and chondrosarcomas of the cranial base

Chondromas and chondrosarcomas of the cranial base are rare neoplastic diseases. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the diagnosis and microsurgical treatment of these difficult cranial base tumors. A total of 19 patients who underwent microsurgery were pathologically diagnosed with cranial base chondromas or chondrosarcomas and their clinical data was reviewed. The chondromas and chon...

Transoral Resection of Giant Parapharyngeal Space Tumors via a Combined Surgical Approach

Introduction: Parapharyngeal space (PPS) tumors account for 0.5% of the head and neck neoplasms. Based on the evidence, 80% of these tumors are of a benign nature. Surgical excision is the treatment of choice for this condition. The present study was conducted to propose transoral resection as an efficient way to excise the benign well-defined tumors of the PPS.   Materials and Methods: Thi...
